THE SAME ARGUMENT KEEPS COMING UP

You talk things through and feel like you've made progress, but before long, the same argument comes up again, leaving you frustrated and wondering why nothing seems to change.

You feel more like roommates

Between work, responsibilities, and everything that needs to get done, there's not much time or energy left for each other.

The trust is gone

Whether it's infidelity, secrecy, or another breach of trust, you're struggling to move forward from what's happened.

At Full Potential Therapy, we help couples understand the patterns keeping them stuck, work through difficult experiences, and rebuild trust and connection so they can move forward together.

What Is Couples Therapy?

Couples therapy is a space to work on your relationship with someone who understands both of you. A long-term, secure, loving relationship is one of the hardest things two people will ever build. The challenges you’re facing are most often a sign that nobody taught either of you how to do the hard parts: how to set a boundary without it driving a wedge, how to disagree without doing damage, or how to stay open when you’re used to guarding yourself.

Building a lasting, loving relationship takes more than caring about each other. It means learning how to navigate disagreements, communicate your needs, set boundaries, and stay connected even when things feel difficult. These aren’t skills we’re necessarily taught. We often learn how relationships work from what we saw growing up, our past experiences, and the ways we’ve learned to protect ourselves when things get hard. Sometimes those patterns help us get through difficult moments, but they can also make it harder to feel close, understood, and supported by each other.

Every relationship has its challenges, but there’s a difference between working through difficult moments together and getting caught in patterns that slowly wear away at your connection. Couples therapy gives you space to understand what’s happening between you, recognize the patterns that keep coming up, and develop new ways to communicate, repair after conflict, and feel closer to each other.

Couples come to us saying things like:

What Couples Therapy Can Help With

We work with couples at all stages of their relationships, helping them navigate everything from communication challenges and recurring conflict to rebuilding trust and strengthening their connection. In-person sessions are available in Toronto’s east end, with online therapy offered throughout Ontario.

Young couple packing and moving boxes at home

One of you wants to talk things through, while the other pulls away, leaving you both feeling frustrated and unheard. We’ll help you understand what’s behind these reactions and find ways to have difficult conversations without getting caught in the same patterns.

When the same argument keeps coming up, there’s often more going on beneath the surface. We’ll help you understand what’s keeping you stuck in the same cycle and work through the underlying issues so you can move forward instead of having the same fight again.

Affairs, secrecy, financial dishonesty, and other betrayals can deeply affect trust and leave you wondering whether things can ever feel the same again. We’ll help you understand what happened, work through the hurt, and figure out what rebuilding trust and moving forward could look like for your relationship.

When life gets stressful or there’s unresolved hurt between you, physical affection and intimacy can start to fade. We’ll help you understand what’s creating distance, talk openly about each person’s needs, and find ways to rebuild emotional and physical closeness that feel comfortable for both of you.

Becoming parents can change your relationship in ways you didn’t expect. Between caring for your children, managing responsibilities, and keeping up with everyday life, it can be hard to find time and energy for each other. We help couples navigate these changes, reconnect as partners, and make room for their relationship alongside the demands of parenting.

Between chores, childcare, finances, appointments, and the invisible work of keeping everything organized, it’s easy for resentment to build when responsibilities feel uneven. We’ll help you understand where the tension is coming from, communicate your needs, and find a more balanced way to share the responsibilities of everyday life.

Moving in together, relocating, career changes, illness, loss, and other major life transitions can change the way you relate to each other. We’ll help you navigate these changes, understand how they’re affecting each of you, and find ways to support one another through the uncertainty.

Decisions about marriage, children, finances, and the future can bring up difficult questions, especially when you’re not sure you want the same things. We’ll help you have open, honest conversations about what matters to each of you, understand where your priorities align or differ, and figure out how to move forward.

Our childhood experiences, past relationships, and experiences of trauma, including abuse or assault, can shape how safe we feel trusting others, navigating conflict, and being emotionally or physically close. Sometimes, the ways we’ve learned to protect ourselves can make it harder to feel safe and connected, even in a loving relationship. We’ll help you understand how these experiences may be affecting your relationship, recognize patterns that keep showing up, and find ways to build trust, safety, and connection.

Not every couple comes to therapy because something is wrong. Sometimes it’s about strengthening what’s already working, understanding each other better, or making space for important conversations before small issues become bigger ones.

Approaches We Use In Couples Therapy

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) looks at what happens between you when things get difficult, including the emotions and needs that aren’t always easy to express. Sometimes one partner pushes for connection while the other withdraws, even though both may be trying to protect themselves. Understanding these patterns can help you move away from blame, respond to each other with more compassion, and find new ways to feel close and secure.

The Gottman Method draws on decades of research into what makes relationships work. It provides practical ways to navigate conflict, bring up difficult topics, repair after arguments, stay curious about each other, and strengthen the friendship and connection that support a lasting relationship.

With specialized training in trauma, we understand how earlier experiences can influence the way you respond to your partner, especially during moments of conflict or vulnerability. We’ll help you recognize when past experiences may be shaping your reactions, understand the needs underneath them, and find ways to feel safer and more connected in your relationship.

Relational psychotherapy looks at how each person’s experiences, expectations, and ways of connecting influence the relationship as a whole. We help you understand the dynamics that develop between you, recognize how you affect each other, and find new ways of relating that support greater trust, understanding, and connection.

How Couples Therapy Works

UNDERSTANDING YOUR RELATIONSHIP

We start by getting to know your relationship, what brought you to therapy, and what each of you hopes to change. Both partners have space to share their experiences, concerns, and perspectives without either person being treated as the problem.

Make Sense of the Patterns Between You

Together, we explore what happens when communication breaks down, conflict arises, or you feel disconnected. We'll also look at how past experiences, emotional needs, and everyday stress may be shaping the way you respond to each other.

BUILDING NEW WAYS TO CONNECT

From there, we’ll work on changing how you communicate, navigate disagreements, and respond to each other. Along the way, we’ll look at what’s improving, what still feels difficult, and how to keep building on the progress you’ve made.

Frequently Asked Questions About Couples Therapy

Not at all. Some couples come during a difficult period or after something significant has happened, while others come because their relationship is important to them and they want to be proactive. Couples therapy can be a place to check in, strengthen communication and connection, or prepare for changes like moving in together, marriage, or becoming parents.

Yes. We help couples navigate the aftermath of infidelity, secrecy, and other betrayals by making space for difficult conversations, understanding the impact on each partner, and exploring what it would take to rebuild trust and emotional safety. Therapy can also help you gain clarity about what moving forward might look like for your relationship.

You might be ready to start therapy while your partner isn’t quite sure about it, and that’s okay. Couples often come in with different expectations, concerns, or levels of readiness. Our role isn’t to take sides or convince either of you that you’re the problem, but to create a space where you both feel heard and can explore what you want from the process.

No. Your couples therapist isn’t there to decide who’s right or wrong or assign blame. Instead, we’ll work to understand each person’s perspective, recognize the patterns contributing to conflict, and help you have more productive conversations. Both partners will have space to feel heard and understood, while also being encouraged to reflect on how their own responses affect the relationship.

Yes. Research suggests that online couples therapy can be effective in helping couples improve communication, strengthen their connection, and work through relationship challenges. For many couples, meeting virtually also makes therapy easier to fit into everyday life, especially when work, parenting, travel, or other responsibilities make attending in person difficult.

We welcome couples of all backgrounds, identities, and relationship structures, whether you’re dating, married, building a life together, or have been partners for years. We work with monogamous and consensually non-monogamous relationships, LGBTQ2S+ couples, and partners navigating major transitions like moving in together or becoming parents. Some couples come to therapy during a difficult time, while others want to strengthen an already healthy relationship and continue growing together.

The first session is about getting to know you and understanding what brings you to therapy. We’ll make space for both partners to share their experiences, talk about what’s been difficult, and explore what you’d each like to get out of the process. You’ll attend the first session together, and we’ll begin building a shared understanding of what you’d like to work on and how therapy can help.

Couples therapy sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes, depending on your needs and Your therapist‘s approach. Most couples begin with weekly or biweekly appointments to build consistency and momentum. How long you attend therapy depends on what you’re working through. Some couples come for a shorter period to focus on a specific concern, while others benefit from longer-term support, particularly when rebuilding trust or working through the effects of trauma. Throughout the process, we’ll regularly check in on your progress, what’s improving, and where more support may be helpful.

Many extended health insurance plans cover psychotherapy, but coverage for couples therapy varies depending on your provider and specific plan. We recommend checking with your insurance company before booking to confirm whether couples sessions are eligible for reimbursement.

Absolutely. Individual therapy and couples therapy focus on different aspects of your life and can complement each other. While individual therapy gives you space to explore your own experiences, emotions, and personal challenges, couples therapy focuses on your relationship and the patterns that develop between you. You can benefit from both at the same time, and with your written consent, your therapists can communicate and coordinate care when it would be helpful. This isn’t required, though, and many couples find that the two approaches work well alongside each other.
